Dear 2010

Dear 2010,

I feel it is only right to send you this letter, we’ve not met face to face, and this will be the last time I have any interaction with you.  I think you will understand that I am very comfortable with this fact, as – to say the least – we have not got along.

The Last Day

This year is nearly over.
I cannot wait to see the back of it.

The Mountain Goats – This Year

I’m hungry for a better life.

Tron: Legacy

So I escaped the snow today to venture into Cardiff.
Worth it.

I’ve been excited about Tron:Legacy for a while now.  Though not a big fan of the original, it was certainly a film that had an impact on me as a child; enough to get hairs tingling on the back of my neck when the original theme eased through the opening sequence, thanks to Daft Punk’s excellent handling of soundtrack duties.

In short, it was fantastic. I enjoyed it immensely.  But while this verdict is nice and glossy, it provides very little in the way of explanation.  Much like the film.
It’s a great film.  But, much like Avatar, that’s not to say it’s a good film.

I don’t know if any of you UK-ers have noticed, but it’s snowing.

Rather disappointingly though, this is the first year where it has genuinely put a damper on things for me.  I have joined the ranks of those who can only moan and grumble about it.
This displeases me.
Because I adore snow.

Students Vs Sweeping Generalisations

I support the student protests.

Dun dun dunnnn!
It’s a statement that will instantly draw so many to make snap judgements of me.
By saying that, many will assume I agree with the trashing of Millbank, that I agree with the anarchists on the roof, the trashing of the police van, and it will mean a number of people will completely dismiss my views.  I’m just another idealist who refuses to live in the real world…

To Find A Ghost

I have lost a friend I’ve never met. A friend who I didn’t really know.

At the end of October, a tiny corner of the internet ceased to be.  Nothing but a tiny online forum on the outside, The Forum Whatever was one of the most important things to ever happen to me.  I made friends with people I would never otherwise have known.  I shared with them what I could not share with anyone I would meet with in person. I fell in love. This would not have happened if not for one man’s simple idea. But now it appears to have gone. Because that man has disappeared.

The Big Three-Oh

In a matter of days I pass this landmark of existence. It appears to have crept up on me far quicker than necessary.

With it has come the anticipated, incessant and irritating insistence that I do something big. I understand why, it’s a nice round figure and I’ll only get the chance to celebrate it once, but what makes me grumble is that the concept of doing this without alcohol is so completely alien to people. The other problem is organising it. As you can tell from scanning previous blogs; stuff is a bit harrowing of late. It’s left me far from anywhere remotely ‘up for’ organising a big party.

But I have. Not a big party, but I saw two events on this Saturday that only celebrating my birthday could bring my friends together for. So I’ll be going to see the massive fun that is Plested & Brown, and then going to a rock club. And a meal on Monday. And a gig on Tuesday…

So I went to see it…

Sick As In Sick

So my dad is pretty awesome.
As in unwell.
Sorry, still being childish from the last blog post.
After making such good progress, this last month has seen far more bad days for him than good.
A few weeks back he was walking without stick or zimmer, I’d get up and he’d have brought the milk in from outside, done the dishes, he’d be alert and upbeat.
But for the last fortnight he’s been sluggish, dazed, unable to walk steadily without his stick and frighteningly similar to how he was in hospital.
We called the doctor out and it looks like he’s picked up an infection. The chemo is leaving his already fragile immune system a mess, despite how low a dosage he’s on. She’s put him on a course of antibiotics, so here’s hoping they get him back on track.

Sick Has Been Twisted

That’s totally sick.

Ew. Or not.  I found myself saying something similar for the first time the other day. I instantly felt uncomfortable.
Words often change meaning; ‘wicked’ being a prime example, but this latest one (latest meaning it’s been in use for a years but I’ve only just noticed it being used here) just doesn’t seem to make any sense, dammit.
“That gig was sick!”.
